Dentures

Rendering of a removable partial denture from Singing River DentistryHow often do you think about your mouth? Unless you are brushing teeth, there’s a good chance that you do not think about it very often. However, if you are missing teeth, you probably think about your mouth quite a bit. This is because tooth loss has a significant impact on every essential function that your teeth perform. Once simple tasks like eating and speaking become a major chore.

Without the ability to chew properly, you can suffer malnutrition. Missing teeth affect your smile and your confidence. At Singing River Dentistry, we can help to restore the functions of your missing teeth with dentures.

Causes of Tooth Loss

Tooth loss has several different causes. One of the most common, however, is periodontal (gum) disease. Periodontal disease is caused by the irritation and inflammation of your gums by oral bacteria and plaque. The longer the issue goes untreated, the worse it becomes. Swollen gums pull away from their position against your teeth, creating pockets that begin to collect bacteria and other debris. As the bacteria continue to attack and multiply, they irritate the jawbone and periodontal ligaments. This eventually leads them to become loose and fall out.

Other causes of tooth loss include such things as:

•  Facial or oral trauma – a car accident, a collision while playing sports, falling at work.

•  Changes in hormones (such as menopause).

•  Osteoporosis.

Denture History

For a few centuries now, when you lost teeth, your only option was dentures. When most people think of dentures, they think of big, bulky, very fake looking removable teeth. However, thanks to technological developments, today’s dentures look nothing like that and are vastly different from their early predecessors.

Technology has allowed for dentures to look much more natural in appearance, be less bulky, and function more effectively. They are still removable prosthetics, designed to be taken out each night for cleaning and to let your gums breathe. Acrylic resin teeth (which can be made to look more like natural teeth) are set into an acrylic base (which can be made to match the color of your gum tissue). Dentures rely on your gums for support and are held in place by suction. They are available in two different types – full dentures and partial dentures.

Full Dentures

Full dentures are made to replace an entire arch of missing teeth, or an entire arch of non-functional teeth. If you still have teeth in your mouth that are no longer viable, they must first be removed. Following any extractions, an impression of the mouth is taken. This impression is used to design and create the denture, ensuring a custom fit.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures (partials) are used when you have a section (or sections) of consecutive missing teeth. After all, if the rest of the teeth in that arch are healthy, there is no need to extract them. Much like full dentures, partials are made from an impression of your mouth. Partial dentures have the addition of metal clasps, which attach to your healthy teeth and provide additional support.

Denture Benefits

Dentures have several benefits:

•  They restore the functions of your teeth.

•  They fill out your mouth, filling out your cheeks to restore a more youthful appearance.

•  With your beautiful smile restored, your confidence will return.
